Mélissa De Sousa
Translated from French
"My name is Mélissa, and I’ve been an auxiliary nurse for 10 years. Of Portuguese origin and the proud mom of two wonderful children, I speak four languages and love spreading good cheer, always with a smile that's just a little too big!
Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to the healthcare field. I had meningococcal meningitis, and after a long stay in the hospital, I was deeply touched by the love and dedication of the medical staff. This inspired me to want to make a difference in the lives of others, just as they did for me. I firmly believe that certain experiences in life, whether positive or negative, shape us and push us to become the best version of ourselves.
While pursuing a college diploma (DEC) in fashion marketing, I volunteered at CHU Ste-Justine, which solidified my passion for the medical field. I then completed a vocational diploma (DEP) at the École des métiers des Faubourgs-de-Montréal. After seven years of valuable experience in hospitals and outpatient care, I felt the need to step out of my comfort zone. I decided to work for six months in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, a rewarding and unforgettable experience. Today, I’m proud to be part of the CMME team.
My parents are a great source of inspiration for me. They arrived from Portugal in the middle of a harsh Canadian winter and showed incredible perseverance to give my sisters and me a better life. I still remember their efforts to learn French, watching ‘Passe-Partout’ with us so they could integrate into Québec society as quickly as possible.
What’s my secret to being so happy? My faith in God, the love of my children, and my husband. I’m proud to uphold strong values and play a positive role in my patients’ lives, seeing them leave my office with a smile. As Frank Irving Fletcher said, ‘A smile costs nothing, but creates much. A smile enriches those who receive without impoverishing those who give.’”
