Alexia Séguin

Clinical Nurse. At Mieux-Être for nearly 2 years.

If you had a completely free day tomorrow, what would you do?

It would definitely start with a good night’s sleep, at least nine hours! Then I’d make myself a big breakfast (my favourite meal of the day) and enjoy it while watching a series on Netflix or Prime. At some point, I’d head to the gym for a strength workout or, ideally, a step or cardio-latino class. Afterwards, I’d reward myself with some ice cream, and to wrap up the day, I’d go out for pasta or join my sister for a line dancing evening.

Someone who inspires you?

It’s actually two people, but without hesitation, I’d say my parents. First, because of the values they instilled in me: the importance of communication, open-mindedness, discipline, and perseverance. They taught me how to strike the right balance between working hard to achieve your goals, constantly challenging yourself, and never forgetting to enjoy life, embrace new adventures, and celebrate your accomplishments.

They also inspire me through the many challenges they’ve overcome over the years, but especially through the lessons they learned and passed on to me. It takes tremendous strength to rebuild after difficult times, but it also takes wisdom and determination to keep moving forward and become the people they are today.

They inspire me every single day, and they will always be my role models. I’ll forever be grateful for the perspective they’ve given me and for helping shape the person I’ve become.

What did your path to this role look like?

After high school, I studied Health Sciences in CEGEP. Looking back, I realize I already knew deep down that I wanted to become a nurse. It felt like a natural step to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing at university. I worked hard throughout my studies, graduated in the top 5% of my class, and completed my final clinical placement in Belgium, an experience that also gave me the opportunity to discover part of Europe.

While studying, I worked as a nursing extern in digestive surgery. After graduating, I explored several practice settings, including the emergency department, before realizing it wasn’t the right fit for me. I then began my career as a clinical nurse specializing in ENT and urology.

For a long time, though, I knew I eventually wanted to work in a Family Medicine Group (GMF), mainly because of the diversity of patients, the broad scope of nursing practice, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact early in patients’ healthcare journeys. I enjoy taking the time to listen, build trusting relationships, and support patients as they progress.

As soon as the opportunity to join a GMF came along, I took it. It has been, without a doubt, the environment where I’ve grown the most as a nurse. Looking ahead, I hope to become an NP one day.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do your job?

Go for it. Nursing is one of the most rewarding professions, with endless possibilities: different practice settings, patient populations, and schedules. There truly is a place for everyone. If you’re passionate about healthcare and enjoy working with people, you’ll find an environment that suits you.

I’d also encourage anyone entering the profession not to lose sight of their own well-being. Nursing is demanding, both during your studies and throughout your career. We dedicate so much of ourselves to caring for others, but it’s just as important to take care of ourselves.

Finally, I’d say to always take the time to truly listen to your patients and adapt your approach to each individual. Every patient is different, and especially in primary care, taking the time to understand what they already know, what they need, and what they want to focus on makes an enormous difference. That’s how you build trust and ensure that health promotion and preventive care have a lasting impact.

What makes you most proud in your role?

What makes me most proud is knowing that I started my practice in a GMF during a period of significant growth at Mieux-Être. I had the opportunity to contribute to the network’s evolution while learning tremendously through the guidance of my managers and the support of my team. For several months, I supported three clinics across the network, an experience that was both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

Thanks to the trust my colleagues placed in me, I’m proud to see how the autonomy of the clinical nurse role has grown and how our range of services has expanded. In a GMF, the possibilities are extensive, from chronic disease management and pregnancy follow-ups to child development, cognitive assessments, and preventive screenings.

Looking back on how far we’ve come since my first days fills me with a real sense of accomplishment. I’m also deeply grateful to the team that supported me and helped make this journey possible.

Your ideal superpower?

Teleportation, without a doubt! I’m always signing up for new activities and juggling multiple projects at once, so it would be incredibly helpful for managing my time. I’m constantly rushing from one place to another, so it would definitely save me some stress, and probably a few late arrivals too haha! And the best part? It would completely transform the way I travel, which is one of my greatest passions.
