Dre Hannah Hyde-de Sousa
Translated from French
“I am Dre Hannah Hyde-de Sousa, and I am a family physician. I joined the Mieux-Être Saint-Laurent team in 2024.
My journey in medicine is rooted in a strong family legacy. I was inspired by my grandmother, a physician from a small island in Portugal who specialized in infectious diseases. As a pioneering woman in medicine, she left her home not speaking a word of French or English and built a remarkable medical career in Montreal. Her resilience and dedication instilled in me a deep respect for both the science of medicine and the humanitarian responsibility that comes with it.
This inspiration led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology at McGill University, where I conducted basic science research on neglected tropical diseases such as Leishmaniasis. While I found scientific research fascinating, I realized I wanted a career where my work could have a direct and immediate impact on people’s lives. Therefore, I completed my medical degree at Université de Montréal and returned to McGill for a residency in Family Medicine, a field that allows me to build long-term, meaningful relationships with my patients.
Born and raised in Montreal, I cherish the city’s rich diversity and multiculturalism. Choosing to practice here was natural for me; this is the community I call home. A particularly meaningful part of my training took place at the CLSC de Parc-Extension, where I worked closely with asylum seekers. That experience sparked a deep commitment to advocating for vulnerable patients and recognizing their complex medical, social, and psychological needs. Today, I continue to follow many of these patients in my practice.
Outside the clinic, I seek balance and joy through my passions. You’ll often find me lost in a good book, exploring the night sky through my telescope, or enjoying everything Montreal has to offer with the people I love.
What I am most proud of in my work is making a tangible difference in my patients’ lives. I am humbled by the trust they place in me and honored to accompany them through both their hardest challenges and their happiest milestones. Whether it’s witnessing an infant reach a new milestone, helping a diabetic patient achieve their goals, or supporting someone through mental health recovery, these moments are what motivate me every day.”
